I admit to being a gearhead. What should I switch down to?

Hi,

I am John and I admit to being a camera gearhead with gear acquisition syndrome. So what should I do given my situation and real photography need?

I started my camera journey in 2004 when I bought my first digital compact, a Canon Ixus 400. Within a year I bought the Rebel XT with kit lens. I then started a lens buying frenzy. I sold the kit lens and bought the EF 28-105, 70-200 4L and 60/2.8 macro. Sold the 28-105, bought the EFS 10-22, sold it and bought 17-40 4L. Sold the 60/2.8 and bought a 50/1.4. Sold the 70-200.

I then was lured into FF and bought a 5D classic. Sold the 350D. Bought the 100/2.0. I stayed with 17-40, 50/1.4 and 100/2.0 for a while before buying and selling the 70-200/4 again. Bought and sold the 100/2.8 macro. Bought a 24-70/2.8 and sold the 17-40, 50/1.4 and the 100/2.0. Stayed with 24-70/2.8 for some time and bought and sold three 135/2.0 within a year. Crazy? Yes! I probably need therapy but all in all I haven’t lost too much money on my adventures and I am luckily still in a good financial situation.

My 5D classic was stolen so I immediately had to buy a 5D Mark II which I have owned since 2009. Not bad! My lens trading has stopped and I now still own the 24-70/2.8 that I bought back in 2008. Oh yes, I have bought the 40/2.8 too this year and a Sony RX100.

So where does this leave me? I realize that given my photography need, mostly my kids and family, I would have been happy with the 350D, 17-40 for general stuff and the 60/2.8 macro for portraits and macro. I now have a camera that is great indeed and I love the quality but it’s not really what I need. It annoys me to carry all that weight and have so much money tied up in photography gear. I love the pocketable RX100 but I think images lacks quality and depth.

So would it be crazy to admit being a gearhead and switch down to something more basic? Cameras in mind to replace the 5D are: Canon 700D and NEX 5r leaning to Canon and DSLR as I still need good AF for my fast kids. Any other suggestions?
