Why can't a camera show a histogram based on the raw file

As I understand it, the histogram shown on the back of the camera is based on a jpeg conversion, even when I am shooting in raw. Why can't it show a histogram based on the actual raw data? This would be useful so that you can see if there is actually detail in the highlights that are blinking on the jpeg, etc.

If not a histogram, then maybe just an indicator to show the proportion of sensor sites that had zero or a maximum output.

Anyone else think this would be useful?
