Sorry i have to correct myself, the above works only if the lens is chipped. I tried a non chipped Nikkor 50/1.4 on my old D50 and one has to use the aperture ring on the lens.  Still the lens stays wide open until you press the shutter button. Maybe your lens has really the aperture blades that are stuck, as someone already suggested. If you remove the lens and move the lever on the rear of it, is the aperture snappy, is it fast? Most of my Russian lenses have oily blades, but that s common with them, yet they work flawlessly.
