a DX camera does indeed pretty much eliminate the need for longer than 80-400 lense. In my case I need the fastest possible fps for racing therefore I had the D3s and now the D4. Testing so far is decent and definitely usable with the 1.4x with the 200-400 but you have to crank fstop or backup the ring a bit to get optimal results. If Nikon comes up with a D400 then that is something I will want to try if I need longer range without TC and a bit less fps, would be equivalent to 300-600 f4 with quite a rugged camera body.
