Long question for old timers
Jun 19, 2013

Well, actually the question is pretty short but it is about using long lenses.

I have 400mm f/3.5 AIs on D800. I am trying to learn manual focusing and long FL shooting.

Any suggestions on what to and not to do? I find the camera range sensor (green dot) pretty accurate. Still learning to use cartzeye split prism, so far green dot is more accurate. Live view zoom focusing can be a major pain because focusing the lens causes enough motion to move the subject at 100% zoom on LCD.

I know the mechanics of DOF vs focus distance vs aperture, so i am mostly looking for practical methods of turning lucky focus into skillful focusing technique at 400mm.

Any advice is appreciated.
