I will try to tweak the threshold somewhat to get less stars to register. It could be I could get better results with that -- and obviously cropping might help even more.

I've also considered writing a small program to do just this; if it would be possible to have e.g. DSS output a list of matching star triangles I could then use the points to calculate a first or second order transformation (or whatever is needed)... I would assume this could be a fairly normal scenario for many that are not using tracking devices.
