It is inaccurate to say it 'will' damage the sensor. It 'can' damage the sensor if one isn't careful. Over the years I've taken a great many direct shots of the sun with a number of different digital cameras, P&S and DSLR, and have never damaged a sensor. Of course, one should exercise care when shooting the sun and not leave the camera pointed at it for any longer than needed to take the shot.

Not to mention of what can happen to your eyes if you stare too long at the sun through the OVF of a DSLR or any camera with the same.
