Revive the GX with an APS-C sensor (like the GR)
Jun 16, 2013

Recently, there was a thread where the A16 zoom unit is compared with the new Leica X Vario. Harold66 made the point that manual zoom and focus rings and a better EVF are the things might put the Leica ahead, otherwise the GXR has better specs (mostly).

Anyway, I do not know whether someone else already made this suggestion, but here it is: What about giving the GX the same treatment as the GR just had -- update it with an APS-C sensor (e.g. the one in the A16 without AA filter), add a new EVF (see below) and keep the zoom range of 24-72, or even better, extend it to 24-80...135 (similar range as the Zeiss 16-80 or Sony 16-105 have) -- and keep the size comparable to the old GX100/200 (will be hard regarding the zoom lens...). Well, manual zoom and focus rings are probably not to be expected from Ricoh...

BTW: Personally, I prefer an optional EVF because it can be tilted. 1.5 MP would be fine, the new Epson panel would be great.

Best regards, Gerd
