Is RAW+JPEG Really Necessary?

Is it necessary to use the RAW+JPEG option that many cameras provide? It obviously produces more files and eats up card space and hard drive space faster.

The reason I ask is that I was planning on going down that road, but have become aware that RAW files contain a JPEG inside them. This IJFR (Instant JPEG From RAW) free utility claims to extract this JPEG if you decide you need it. Qimage Ultimate also claims to have an extract feature. The JPEG is an in camera rendition of the image reflecting camera settings (that can be used with RAW).

The other advantage would be faster processing in multi frame shooting mode.

Does anybody do this? Quality of the embedded JPEG? Is it a practical way to go?
