Rudi, the D4 fills its histogram all the way to ISO 6400, indicating that ISO amplification is applied analogically all the way to there - but bclaff's graph suggests that there is no benefit in IQ increasing ISO beyond 3200, and only a 0.1 stop penalty stopping at ISO 800 if the larger DR is needed.

Thanks Jack. Much obliged. Instills even more confidence in my D4 purchase.

Thom Hogan replied to an email where I asked about the D3s at 800iso compared to D4:

'The D4 is different than the D3s. It loses some dynamic range with each ISO boost. It does better than the D3s at base ISO, for example. But it does about the same (at the pixel level) at ISO 1600 and up. Thus, I set ISO to the lowest possible value always on the D4, as I do on the D800.'
