D2x was CMOS, though.

Yes the D2x was CMOS but unlike later CMOS cameras, it had off-chip, 4 channel A/D conversion with colour analogue preconditioning which was also used in the D200, and two channel off-chip etc., in the other CCD chips. As the OP states, it is the simplicity of getting good colours that is remarkable. John
