Of course you can.  But why would you want to limit yourself like that?  Modifiers are tools just like, well, tools.  Go to any hardware store and go to the tool section.  Do you see just ONE kind of hammer?  Do see ONE kind of screwdriver?  How about saws?  Clamps?  Nails, screws, etc.  Do you really think a master carpenter could get through life with only one type of those tools?  Maybe.  But a true master knows there are several tools to to used for certain tasks.  Just like our lighting tools.

You have to understand how you control lighting AND contrast to get the desired effect you want.  One bare light will never accomplish ALL the type of lighting you may want to create in the future.
