another great set up for butterflys/dragonflys is the nikon 300 f4 af-s with the tc14 ii. not 1;1 but the whole creature can fill most of the frame from 5 feet away with excellent sharpness.

This setup lives on my D7000 most of the time that I'm shooting wildlife - long for the birds but also close enough for larger insects and flowers (anything down to butterfly-sized). You do however need a lot of light if shooting handheld - to hold 1/640 (DX 1.5/f.l. rule) at macro apertures of f/11ish is a challenging task!

If I need to get really close then I have the Sigma 150 OS...
