Best we not be locked into an either or situation. I dearly wish our current DSLRs had on sensor PDAF available in mirror up mode. Now that would be awesome!

And an option to fit on an external EVF. Gimme gimme

Yep, both options have their place.

There are current DSLRs/large sensor cameras with on-sensor PDAF, but there's no implementation that really tracks well in low light. The Canon cameras don't have a reputation for fast focusing. The Sony a99's on-sensor points don't work with most lenses and can't be selected (auto only). Mirrorless implementations can somewhat track in bright light, but don't deliver at all in anything less.
