I use a Wacom Intuos.  It took a little getting used to after only using a mouse for so long before but it was well worth it.

There are still things I use the mouse for, but for some thins, like making selections, masking, dodging and burning and anything you do with a brush, the accuracy and control offered by the pen and pressure sensitivity can't be beat.

The Bamboo tablets are very capable and reasonably priced.  If you want to go higher-end, you can likely find a good deal on a used tablet on Amazon or one of these photography forums, or a refurbished one from Wacom.

Size does matter too.  The Bamboo is a very comfortable size to work with.  Many people like the small or Medium sized Intuos, the large seeming to be more specialized and used by graphic artists and people doing digital painting, drawing and artwork.
