I tried long exposures with my new D600 for the first time today and found the same problem -- a whitish line about 1/4 of the way up the frame and a magenta cast.  It seems to appear when exposure time exceed 1.5 seconds.  I tried to reproduce it at home by putting on the lens cap and taking a 30 second exposure.  I didn't get the line, but I did get a strong magenta  "hot spot"  that got progressively weaker as I shortened exposure time.  It disappeared at 10 seconds, probably because of the weaker light source in my office compared to bright sunlight.

After reading your post I remembered that the D600 manual specifically states you need to use the viewfinder cap when taking long exposures.  Wish I'd remembered that sooner!

Thanks for the post!
