I doesn't have to be an either or (hood or filter) -  I always use both on Nikon kit - all my lenses from 16-35 to 70-200 are fitted with Nikon NC 77mm slimline filters- this way I can get away with a CP filter as well without having to change filters on the run.  Never had any trouble with them and they are tough - bent the ring of one in Ecuador - glass remained intact.  I have also used Hoya NC Protector (not uv) filters to good effect.  As with most things in life, you get what you pay for.   Nikon NC is not cheap but they work for me.
