Hi, there

I was thinking about purchasing one of these lenses and was hoping that maybe someone could tell me how they compare with iq and af (I read the 100mm isnt very good..) etc. also which one gives you better qualtiy pricewize they cost about the same in Germany, both around 500. Most of my pictures I take are portraits. read the 100mm is supposed to quite nice for portraits as well.

any thoughts

cheers

Where did you read the 100mm wasn't good?  They are both good lenses, very different though.  As for portraiture, any will work.  My only complaint with the 70mm is the minimum focus distance is not good for the focal length, but probably adequate for most uses.

If you aren't going to use macro, the 70mm is a lot more compact.  As for focal lengths, a pretty typical standard portrait zoom is 50-135mm on APS-C (70-200 on full frame, 135 format).  This really depends on where you are shooting, what field of view you want, etc.

If I used mainly a 17-70mm or similar lens, the 70mm prime might not be as interesting.  If I wanted a compact set of primes, something like a 21mm, 40mm, and 70mm are really good spacing.

I meant its autofocus wasn't very good (lens tip says it isnt very precise either).
