He's a great looking kid! And thanks, I had AI SERVO for continuous focus. Stopping down would have probably fixed this issue, maybe I'll give it another try another day. How do people shoot sports with 2.8 and get tack sharp images of moving subjects then? I'm new to shooting moving things. I usually shoot in a studio with static objects.

Canon 50d gripped, 70-200 f2.8L IS USM, 50mm f1.8, 18-55 f3.5-5.6, 430ex II, Carry Speed FS Pro Sling Strap

For sports they may use continuous, & shoot a burst so one or 2 should be in focus.
