I had a 40D and switched to 5D mk2. To me, the focal lengths of lenses made much more sense for FF camera's. 35 mm on crop translates well to 50 mm on FF, but there are many examples where it does not:

- 24-105. 24 is much wider on FF than 17 on crop.

- 100 mm lenses are very nice portrait lenses on FF and there are many around this focal lentgh. 85 f1.2, 100mm f2, 100mm f2.8 L macro --> great lenses. I know there is an EF-S 60mm f2.8 but that is not the same as 100 mm f2.8 on FF.

- 70-200 lenses are awesome from Canon. Probably the best there are. On FF they are actually usefull indoors as well for multiple things. 70 mm is still very practical. But putting them on a crop is usually already too long, because they start at 100.

But I am not sure I would go for a 5D first gen. In my country 5D mk2 are already very cheap as well (~1000 euro). That one would probably still give you a very good resell value for the coming years.
