I wonder why people see the first appearance of the EVF in a semi-pro level DSLR and especially one that (if ever released) would be targeting the action shooter. So probably exactly the user group which expects the best AF, uses the heaviest lenses (so does not care at all about size and weight) and could probably be considered heavily invested into a DSLR system and on the conservative side of things.

Would the D5100 for example not be much more obvious for a EVF?

Flipping the mirror up and down at high frame rates is both mechanically challenging and also interrupts your AF function. This is why Canon earlier and more recently Sony have been trying fixed mirror designs for bodies which target ~10 fps or so.

Since an EVF is probably also cheaper in the long run, then yes a D5x00 would also be a prime target for EVF (have you seen how much bigger view the current EVFs give compared to the D3x00/5x00 OVF?!?!). But then, absolute advantages like very high frame rate may not be as compelling to that market, and it becomes harder to differentiate your camera vs. competitors' mirrorless systems.
