Yes,  the D800 can be used for Sports ,  AF speed is up to the task.

First 5  Bike images in this gallery is from the 2012 Honolulu Triathlon ( I shoot it every year).  This bikes are on a long open road with the wind at there backs.  So they are going pretty fast.

And if you notice I am tacking them and only shutter when they cross Diamond Head.

The tricky part that I am impressed with the  D800 AF performance is.    As you  know bikes love to draft in groups of say 5 or more.  imho, the test of a Fast AF is when you can shoot the lead bike and then catch 2  or 3  from the same pack.  Try it ,      A real test of how a camera can lock on FAST.  The D800  has done it for me.   As has the D700.  (which I now only use for sports)
