The prefocus is very well explained by Mike. When you don't want the Nex to prefocus the only setting you can use is manual focus.

The battery life of an milc is way shorter then that of a DSLR, this has to do with the fact that both the sensor and the LCD is constant using power to give you a liveview. Compact and most video cameras have very small sensors that consume less energy.

You should get about 360 pictures on a full battery. It can take a couple of charges befor the battery is loaded to it's full capacity. You can save a lot of energy by switsing off your camera after taking a picture, not to reviewbto often your pictures on the LCD not to playbto much with  the powerzoom etc. And a good advice is to buy a spare batery, there are on Ebay batteries tnhat costs just a few dollars and the perform good.
