There's a lot of decent enthusiast compacts that cover 24-70 or 28-100. In good light they make great images. For that reason, my daytime walk around travel gear is an RX100 and then a good quality constant aperture 70-200 on the big camera (and a good wide zoom carried, 14-28 or 16-35 depending on the camera).

While theft is rife in most major cities, percentage-wise you'd have to be very unlucky to be the victim and accordingly insurance is pretty reasonable. Crowded places where you are being distracted and jostled are the most risky; the tube and busy pubs, or coffee bars where you relax and let your guard down

The 24-70 will be most useful at night; there's a lot of great photo ops along the Thames, all the way from Butlers Wharf (Tower Bridge) to Chelsea.
