70-200 f/4 or 105 AF-S Macro?
May 30, 2013

I finally upgraded to a D600 recently and packaged it with an 18-35G for wide landscape stuff. I also picked up the 70-300 since it was relatively cheap with the D600, but after shooting some with it, have been less than impressed with its sharpness across the frame.

So I'm looking for a better telephoto and wanted some input from of you who may have tried both the 70-200 f/4, and the 105 AF-S Macro. I don't do a lot of super long shooting, but do need some more reach to accompany the 18-35. I had the 16-85 with my D5100 so am used to having that reach out to 127mm (DX).

What are your thoughts on the zoom vs. the prime? The 105 also adds the close-up option which I wouldn't mind doing a bit as well, but worry if it will still be too short from what I'm used to. From everything I've read, both are plenty sharp and would be a big improvement over the 70-300. If you had to choose only one, which would it be and why?

Thanks in advance,
