Hi All,

Harveydad suggests we who are interested in restoring the integrity of the challenge system grab DPR’s attention by hitting them where it hurts – the number of clicks we are generating.

My knee-jerk reaction was ‘maybe a Good Idea’.   However, I have done a little crude research at http://www.dpreview.com/misc/advertising (which is 5-6 years out of date) and http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/http://www.dpreview.com (which is up to date).

While I have not found detailed statistics on ‘clicks per page’ it seems to me that the total number of clicks generated by this forum when expressed as a percentage of total clicks on the site equates to the proverbial pebble on a beach.   For example, the average number of clicks in 2008, when all forums are included, was about 50 million per month.

You will also see (on Alexa) that the DPR’s popularity in the rankings is sliding in the last year or so.   In early 2012 its’ global ranking was in the 700’s whereas it is now in the 1300’s.   I’m not sure what can be concluded from this statistic – it might mean only that 600 other sites are gaining clicks at a faster rate than DPR.   One way or another, I think I can conclude that DPR’s ‘value’ as an advertising medium is falling vis-à-vis sites generally.    If this is a valid conclusion, it is easy to see why we don’t make the first 100 pages of Simon Joinson’s priority list.

The point I am making is that we who value honesty and integrity are too probably too small a group to have any effective impact on DPR’s policies or practices.   Having said that, even though I abandoned challenges some time ago, I am inclined to take Simon J at his word and see if he lives up to his commitment to deliver improvements before the end of the year.   Maybe I am being naïve!   I agree with OldArrow – if Simon J does not deliver on his promise I’ll be in the departure lounge too!

Regards to all,

Pat.
