When I do this sort of work, I construct a large 'light tent' around the painting and illuminate it with a couple of studio flashes to give an even light.  These seem large artworks and if you need large reproductions, the D800 is the best you can get.  Any macro type lens should give a minimum of distortion.  You will probably find that hand-held, no matter how much you try, you will get some sort of perspective distortion which you will have to correct for in Photoshop.
