Sigma DP1 Merrill pictures: Classic English countryside
May 29, 2013
I just read a forum post about somebody asking if the DP1M's soft corner problem is gone once you stop down. I'd like to take this opportunity to share some of my pictures that I took this weekend on a walk along the river Thames. I bought this camera mainly for landscape shots and because it is small and lightweight.  I got 140 shots out of a single battery charge with preview on and the battery still had 2 bars when I finished my hike. Now let's come back to the soft corner problem that some people mention. Looking at my pictures I can't find it ... not because I am ignorant, but because I think that the wide angle lens on the DP1M cannot be treated the same way as the lens on the DP2M. So far my impression is that Sigma did an excellent job with this lens. To me the corners look sharp at f8 and that's all I wanted for landscape pictures. On the few occasions where I am looking for a shallow DOF, the subject is most likely in the center or close to it, so I never analyze the corners in such situations. I really like the manual focusing ring which is now on the lens (as opposed to the back of the camera on the original DP1) and the change in the minimum close focusing distance down to 20cm (not to speak about the fast lens as well ... from f4 to f2.8).  I initially bought the DP2M and later the DP1M to be able to decide which one suits me better. I am trying to make my mind up whether to keep the DP1M or DP2M. It's though. I think I like both and I cannot find a real problem in any of them ... but I can't justify keeping both. I wish there was an interchangeable lens mount on them. After walking 4 hours on Monday with the DP1M there was no sign of shoulder or neck pain ... the camera was so light in my hand ... and this is something I really like.  So now to the pictures: - All simple landscape shots ... just to document my walk - manual exposure, mostly at f8 - all handheld Pictures are available on Flickr:

Please note: The sharpness in the RAW files is better than in the full size JPEG versions.
