You will not be missing anything if you get the Sigma.  I have all 3 of the lenses you have or are thinking about.  I have the 18-200 VRII, the 35 f/1.8, and the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8, bought in that order. In my opinion, the Sigma is by far the best.

The 18-200 was my first lens, and I was really worried the 17 - 50 would not be "long" enough. However, the 17-50 range on DX seems to be excellent for general photography.  Plus, you get the constant f/2.8.

In my opinion, save, and get the Sigma.  Good luck whatever you decide.
