Missing $450 of gear- who pays, Assistant or Photographer?

A day after an architectural shoot, the photographer that I worked for claimed that I had lost $450 of gear that I neither recognize nor even recall handling. Now they are informing me that they intend on deducting this from my pay, and are "trying to be fair by splitting the cost with me".

For all I know, they could have misplaced this when they changed a tire en route to the shoot location (they live ~500 miles away) and had to haul out all their gear from their vehicle. We weren't shooting in a public location, so it's unlikely someone just walked off with it. Or maybe they feel that since business is down for them, they are entitled to retroactively reduce our agreed-upon wages of $175/day and $125/half-day.

How is this typically handled?
