More artistic and less photorealistic

I am a left brain (more technical and less artistic) photographer.

I enjoy photographing jumping ballet photos. I would like to be able to sell these to the mothers of the dancers as large framed prints, but I would like to make them look more artistic than originally shot.

The photo of this dancer was shot against a white seamless background, and to me it looked a little boring. I attempted to make it look more artistic by adding a different background, and I blended the color of the background with the dancers to make her blend with the background more. I also added the shadow in post as she was shot about 8' from the background. In the original photo her skin was the correct color.

I would like to hear comments on whether this is more artistic, or did I just ruin a good photo. I would appreciate hearing about any Photoshop techniques for achieving my goal in making these types if images more artistic.
