I was always a jpeg shooter with my D40, I don't shoot anything fancy just enjoy being out with the camera and trying to captures what I enjoy.  I was always happy with these files and only on the odd time shot raw when I was in a tricky light situation.  I now have a D90 and it is taking some getting used to in terms of getting images in the colour I am happy with, I am constantly playing around with the white balance.  I have started shooting raw and it does make a difference for changing the white balance and exposure.  The only slight issue I have is I am seeing more noise/grain when I zoom in which I don't like.  At the moment as a newbie to RAW viewnx does all I need and I don't really want to pay for software at the moment.  I have no in camera noise reduction applied, I am just looking for crisp clear images.  Not sure if there is an easy option for this noise reduction.
