Sharpness with this lens (and other superzooms for that matter) can only be improved by stopping down. I try to use at least f/8 at the long end, better even f/11. Only if there is not enough light (and I cannot use a longer exposure), I use it wide open. It is e.g. better to use f/8 at ISO400 than f/5.6 at ISO200.
