Sun Dogs from my window

I spotted this phenomenon the first time some 6 months ago, and a repeat yesterday: two bright patches in the sky each side of the Sun. Though they are "rainbowish" I knew that it was not a rainbow because the angle spanned was wrong (rainbow is much wider, it forms a 42 degrees angle with the observer).

A search in the internet showed that this must be a "Parhelion", also know by the common name of "Sun Dogs". I had not seen it before this first time (6 months ago).

I wonder if in other latitudes (I am around 40 degrees North) it is more common.

The Sun image itself is blocked by the observer's head. The Sun Dogs are in the far right and left of the image
