Sharpening in Aperture 3
May 19, 2013

I am finding that the edge sharpen adjustment in Aperture barely has any effect on the sharpening at all. The only way to get any noticeable increase in sharpness is to max out all the sliders, but i keep reading that this will result in over sharpening.

The difference in sharpness with all sliders set at the maximum setting of 1, is usually just barely noticeable. In photoshop i can get a subtle sharpening effect using the smart sharpening tool with the amount set about halfway and the radius around 2 -  3. I can actually see the image sharpness changing as i move the sliders, but in Aperture i cannot notice any difference. Here are some sample images:

1. Original image exported from Aperture, no sharpening added after RAW fine tuning: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/6ttp5l3qp60kcer/236oqsVVlO/no-sharpening.jpg

2. All sliders set to max in Edge Sharpen: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/6ttp5l3qp60kcer/vmU4vQFLk8/intensity1edges1falloff1.jpg

3. Sharpened with Photoshop CS5 using smart sharpen tool, Amount 95 and radius 2.4: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/6ttp5l3qp60kcer/B0NI-FuBJH/photoshop-amount95radius2.4.jpg

4. Sharpened with Photoshop CS5 using smart sharpen tool, Amount 121 radius 3.6 (maybe a bit too much?): https://www.dropbox.com/sh/6ttp5l3qp60kcer/uiIiat1tEM#f:photoshop-amount121radius3.6.jpg

Is the sharpening in Aperture really ineffective or am i using it incorrectly?
