Help: Explain why AVCHD files are better than mp4 ?

Thanks for the elucidation!!

My software for editing will edit all the above as well, but NONE will output to AVCHD, rather preferring 'standards' such as mp4, mkv, avi, etc.

My PC's, WD media player, will play mkv, avchd, mov, mp4, mp2, avi, etc.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVCHD

Why is this file type so important & apparently necessary to some, especially for simple P&S/DSLR video recordings, is it due to shortcomings of various software apps ?

I get the impression that some/many ppl on forums are disappointed when video files are not stored in AVCHD, and think it somehow superior to mp4 for instance.

(asked elsewhere with no answer)
