I'VE NEVER POSTED A NEGATIVE COMMENT ON KEN ROCKWELL'S ADVICE - BUT

Today he says that "fine tuning of modern lenses" is ....totally unnecessary! He further states that HE never does it and encourages US not to do it either.

wish he knew what he was talking about! It would  be nice if everything worked the way it's supposed to.

My new Nikkor 80-400 requires a -11 fine-focus adjustment to 'nail the focus spot'. I wish I had saved the test I performed...taking an image at each step from 0 to 20. You could CLEARLY see the image come into and move out of focus.

SO - are we to then assume Nikon is selling us defective CAMERAS (or at least cameras with defective focus mechanisms)?

I make no claims for expert knowledge on this subject either way. But I do know that if I didn't fine-tune the lens, I would still be getting less-than-perfect results. Am I missing something?
