Another vote for the Tamron 70-300 USD.  I have this lens and really like it, and focusing is fast and quiet so I use it for video too.  I've used it a lot for kids sports; outdoors it is outstanding.  Indoors, not bad but I do end up going a bit higher in ISO than I like so a fast aperture lens is on my "maybe someday" list, but right now I can't afford that.

I would also say get the 35/1.8; I just sort of leave it on my camera at home since image quality is great and it's so good in low light.  Having the fixed focal length wouldn't work for events where you can't move around, but in general it makes you think a little bit which is a good thing.  I'd keep the 18-135, and get the Tamron and 35/1.8, then start saving for the 16-50 F/2.8.  That's my plan at least.
