Since you mentioned portraits the 85mm f/1.8 will be better for this type of photography... the 85mm will give you a better BOKEH and at the same time will give you lesser distortion specially head shots. Although you will be shooting in crop you are not changing the characteristics of the lens you are only "cropping" or lessening the field of view.
And yes it is worth keeping the 50mm as well but if you can upgrade to a better 50mm like the 1.4 or the sigma... much better imho.
