Re: Comparisons XE1, Nikon D800E and Sony Nex 6 images
In reply to Enir4, May 13, 2013

I have all 3 cameras. I did some comparisons for my own education about how these perform relative to each other.

With XE1 versus Nex 6 I found it depended more on the lenses. XE1 though seemed to have a small edge. Not massive but observable. So as you are familiar with Nex 7 that may give you some idea.

Fuji 18-55 zoom is an excellent lens. But the Fuji 35mm F1.4 is considerably sharper. So you will get more fine detail with that lens. So lens choice as always comes into play.

The Nikon D800E I think would be regarded as the sharpest, most resolving camera out there. It outresolves the XE1 but with the Fuji 35mm F1.4 the gap was considerably narrowed. The D800E still has more detail but the little Fuji held its own.

These Fuji images were all jpegs so there may be a slight improvement since with RAW (I don't think its much over jpeg though and is it worth the extra processing??) , so keep that in mind.

Compared to the XE1/18-55 combo the D800E/24-70 is considerably sharper. As I say it was far less with the 35mm F1.4.

So of these 3 cameras I would rate D800E sharpest - no contest, XE1 by a small but noticeable margin then Nex 6. By detail here I am mainly referring to distant objects rather than closeup as closeup I would have though XE1, Nex 6 are plenty sharp.

Some don't like links to images but the originals are large images which you would need to look at to see the detail I am referring to:

All in all I think worries about smearing are needless concerns and other factors are more relevant like the jpeg colour engine, the superb white balance engine, great ergonomics, fantastic lenses that are reasonably priced.

If you want to capture maximum distant detail in landscapes I don't think this camera is ideal. The D800E is.

But I must say the cameras I have been using the most the last few months have been the XE1 and the Nex 6. So light, so portable, so capable in such a small package. That is their real strength. The D800E seems a beast compared to these cameras.

Greg.
