It is probably because of the new 5dmkiii firmware. I had a Delta battery for almost 4 months. It lasts ok, it was showing correct values of shutter and capacity in the battery info menu. After updating the firmware it always shows 0 shutter count and inconsistent capacity. So what you are saying about putting a Canon OEM battery and after that the third party showing charded again could be the camera, not the battery.

This is all part of Canon's policy of selling more to you

But yes third party batteries can sometime fry your camera. But cameras get damaged even with OEM batteries.

We have been using the Delta batteries for years with several 5d2 so when I bought the 5d3 I trusted to get the same batteries. But now with the new firmware the work all right but the camera doesn't show the info any more.
