Sirui M-3204 vs. Gitzo GT2542L
May 10, 2013

I am about to purchase one of these tripods to go with an Arca-Swiss P0 head, SunwayFoto DDY-64i discal clamp and Arca Swiss universal L-Bracket.   The application is landscape, portrait, HDR, Panorama and other uses.  The camera is a D600 and battery grip, using various midweight lenses with the potential to go up to 400mm in the future.

The height and other basic specs are almost identical.  However, the Sirui M-3204 is a more versatile package with cushioned feet that are convertible to spiked, foam leg covers, one leg converts to monopod, carry case, 6-year warranty, etc..  The Sirui also has slightly larger 32mm main legs vs. 28mm on the Gitzo GT2542L, but the actual Sirui load rating is somewhat lower, perhaps being more conservative.  The weight is 0.6lb more than the Gitzo, but the Sirui folded size is about 5" shorter.  The Sirui is also about $130 less, even after the Gitzo $150 rebate which expires in June (15th?)

Overall, the Sirui seems to have the advantage.  Yet, the Gitzo has a famous reputation for a reason.   But, is it really any better in terms of quality, stability, reliability, ease of use, etc.

Thanks for any input!
