Advice needed: What would you do?
May 8, 2013

Hi all,

I'm looking to boost performance on my photo workstation that I built a couple years ago.

What's the best bang for my buck?

  • New video card (2GB+)
  • More RAM
  • SSD drive for Operating system and use as a scratch/working drive for post-processing
  • New CPU
  • Moving images/cache/previews to different locations
  • etc

The main guts of my current system are:

  • Intel BOXDP67BGB3 LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
  • Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics
  • SAPPHIRE 100314-2SR Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card
  • 2 x Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Blackline Desktop Memory Model
  • (Operating System and Applications Drive) 1 x Western Digital WD Black WD7502AAEX 750GB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
  • (1 drive for images and LightRoom catalog, other drive for LR cache and previews, and file backup managed by CrashPlan) 2 x Western Digital WD Black WD2002FAEX 2TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

I really appreciate any ideas!

Thanks in advance
