wacky ink level percentages on the epson 7900/9900

In the past, i have changed my 7900 ink cartridges when they hit 1 percent.

This time I tried something new after reading in the manual to change them when an X appears.

Last week, i noticed that the vivid light magenta jumped rather quickly to 1 percent.

I have had the PK and Y (yellow) sitting at 1 percent for quite some time and have done

several huge/long prints and (then) nozzle checks.

Therefore, how does the printer calculate ink levels?

I am thinking it is a "guestimate" based on usage. when it hits one percent, maybe it shows the X  when the  channel is actually empty?

When do 9900/7900 users change their cartridges? does anyone know how it works?
