Actually, the real problem is that once you start paying for the software, you never can say, "ok, no updates for me this year, I'll just use what I have and save some money"...to continue to use the software (and open any propriatary files from PS), you must continue to pay.  If you stop paying, the program stops being useable.  That's the part of the model that, for me, is totally unacceptable.
