D300S camera settings for portraits...

I have volunteered to take some portraits for a local event. The setting will be a father, mother, and child against a portable backdrop in a large room. Up to 80 families may be present. I'm imagining a production line of sorts: One family sits down, a photo is taken, they move on to the event, the next family sits down, etc. Since I prefer landscapes to portraits, I am looking for some friendly advice on equipment settings, not composition. My main concern is avoiding blurry photos. Thank you.

Details

Nikon D300S with SB700 flash and 24-120 f/4 lens (a 50mm/f1.8 is available.) Handheld with lens vibration reduction on. Estimated exposure ISO 400 at f/8 (shutter speed selected by aperture priority mode.) Single point auto-focus. Center-weighted metering. Diffuser on flash (high ceiling may prevent bounce flash.) Some post production will be done such as cropping to 4 x 6", white balance, etc.
