Absolutely right of course, in terms of what works visually.  But this discussion isn't about what works in a pragmatic sense, it's about trying to understand the cause or reason that someone prefers Foveon.

If the reason people prefer Foveon is because it avoids something conventional sensors employ (eg demosaicing) that turns out to harm image quality, then that is a pointer towards doing things differently in future.

For example is there any reason why instead of Bayer patterns we shouldn't arrange the CFA as a series of RGB triangles? That way we would have all three colours directly sampled for each pixel.

Admittedly we'd be in the same slightly wasteful situation of requiring 3 photosites for each image pixel but with a 36 million photosite sensor we'd still get an uninterpolated 12MP file.  If demosacing robs roughly 50% of real resolution that would still equate to a 24MP Bayer sensor without the drawbacks of having to guess colours.

On the other hand, if we knew that it wasn't demosacing that was the problem but some intrinsic thing that Foveon does, it would be very useful to know what it was in case it could achieved without resorting to layered sensors and silicon filter - as this approach comes with penalties of its own.
