Both of your picture looks acceptably sharp to me if the intention is to print at 8x10.

However, I noticed that POSSIBLY you have a sligth amount of back-focus, if your intention was to focus on the eyes. The T-shirt and the hair around the ears look rather sharp to me, and maybe a tad more so than the area around the eyes.

I've had (minor) challenges also with some lenses, and have applied some amount of Auto Focus Micro Adjustment for the relevant lenses, so that the optimal focus plane usually is where I think it should be

Part of the problem is that if you look at the pixels 1:1, the perceived depth-of-field is really shallow and any small focus errors become very visible.
