I think a trend these days, at least in my mind, is that stills are made from "video" - that is, a still image is assembled an created from an ensemble of sequential images.  This offers advantages in dynamic range, superresolution, low light sensitivity, motion compensation 3D and other computationally intensive post-capture processing -- all to create a better still image.

Basically the opposite direction of the historical trend - creating video from a sequence of pictures - motion pictures.  In the future we will use motion pictures to create a still image.
