The CamRanger works pretty well for this purpose, it is more of a complete solution that gives the iPad control over the camera, like for setting exposure and touch-to-focus, which is pretty awesome.

The downsides are the live-update image on the iPad is not updated in real-time, it's more like 5 frames per second, which can be very frustrating. And the touch-to-focus is not instant, so forget about instantly focusing on a moving object like a bird, it's just too slow.

For bird pictures at my feeder, I either pre-focus on a spot or wait for a bird to hang out for a while:
